The Development Department at Thurston Woods Village supports the organization’s mission by presenting and promoting charitable options with a variety of opportunities and resources available to donors who are interested in making responsible, practical, informed giving decisions based on personal values, financial assets, and philanthropic needs.
“The act of philanthropy is a spiritual act, an expression of caring for one’s fellow human beings. It is a belief in the future and that the future can be good. It is investing in that future. It is helping to make the dream come true.”
– Arthur Frantzreb
Increased financial resources resulting from the generosity of donors will help Thurston Woods Village continue to improve services and programs for the purpose of enhancing the quality of life for all of our residents. Your contribution is a blessing, your donation an act of kindness, and your gift an expression of love that will make a significant difference in someone’s life.
“To do something, however small, to make others happier and better, is the highest ambition, the most elevating hope, which can inspire a human being.”
– John Lubbock
Cash
Gifts by cash, credit card or check.
Bequests
A bequest is a very simple and uncomplicated way to help provide for the future of Thurston Woods Village. A bequest may be of a specific sum, a percentage, or the residue of an estate, and may consist of cash, securities, life insurance proceeds, real estate and/or personal property.
Charitable Gift Annuity
In exchange for an irrevocable gift of cash, securities, or other assets, one or two donors receive a fixed sum each year for life. The amount of fixed income is based on the donor(s) age(s), and in most cases, part of each payment is tax-free.
Investment Assets
Stocks and bonds, retirement funds (please consult your tax advisor), real estate and other property, if they have grown in value, make it possible to give a larger donation for less cost and even provide tax benefits for you.
Life Insurance
Gifts of life insurance are a great way to leverage your giving. Donate paid-up life insurance policies with cash values, or new policies, with Thurston Woods Village named as the owner and the beneficiary. Some of our supporters no longer need their life insurance policy (purchased years ago to provide for children or other family members) and they can donate the policy to Thurston Woods Village.
Securities
Securities, both publicly traded and closely held, and bonds can be used to make a gift to Thurston Woods Village. A donor is entitled to a charitable tax deduction equal to the value of the securities on the date of the gift. Thurston Woods Village is able to sell the securities and use the proceeds, without reduction by capital gains taxes because of TWV’s status as a nonprofit organization. Gifts of closely held stock require additional planning and may require approval by the TWV Board of Directors.
Corporate Gift
If you are an owner or CEO of a business, consider making a corporate gift through which you may derive federal tax benefits as well as additional benefits.
Corporate Matching Gifts
Some corporations provide a matching amount for a employee contribution. If your company provides this benefit, it is a great way to increase your donation. To find out if your company or your spouse’s company offers a matching gift program, contact the company’s Human Resources Office.
*Thurston Woods Village is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation. Your gift may be tax deductible. We encourage you to consult your financial advisor or attorney before choosing any of our plans.
Thurston Woods Village conducts various fundraising events throughout the year for the benefit of our residents. Our biggest event is the annual Auction and bazaar, held on the second Saturday of every November. Donations from residents, families, staff, businesses, churches, service clubs, groups, universities, and charitable minded individuals from Sturgis, St. Joseph County, and the Michiana area help make this event a huge success year after year. The proceeds from the auction and bazaar are used to help Thurston Woods Village continue to fulfill our commitment of providing quality senior living and healthcare services, and carry out our mission of honoring God through our ministry.
The Thurston Woods Village Endowment Fund is a financial resource that can ensure no resident will have to leave because they are unable to pay. As the Thurston Woods Village Endowment Fund grows, our organization becomes less dependent on an increasingly unpredictable Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement system. Your help is needed, and deeply appreciated.
